Johnny Victory's post-game notes: Army vs. UMass
On a dreary, slate gray day, typical for upstate New York this time of year, Army dominated UMass Saturday, 18-6. Competing with an Army-Navy basketball double- header and cold dreary weather, the Black Knights tripled up the Minutemen in front of a sparse crowd.
THIS ONE WAS OVER WHEN: They broke the huddle for the opening faceoff. Clearly Army was the superior team on both ends of the field and Gorilla lax never stood a chance.
ARMY DOMINATION: Army was sharp on both ends of the field. After UMass got it to within 4-2 in the 2nd quarter the Black Knights ripped off seven unanswered goals to leave the outcome in little doubt. Offensively the Patriot League’s most efficient team in 2017 scored 18 goals on 43 shots and were 4 of 7 on extra man opportunities. The Army defense was also strong as UMass struggled to get quality looks, let alone shots, on goal.
SPREAD THE WEALTH: The defending Patriot League regular season champion Black Knights had 10 different players score.
WHATS UP WITH: Army trying out multiple folks at the faceoff, to include freshman long-stick middie, Kyle Beyer? It’s early so Coach Joe Alberici was likely tinkering with one of his team’s one weak area. They won just 9 of 25 against the Minutemen and gave up two quick goals from face-off win and scores by UMass FO man Noah Rak.
TOUGH BREAK: With 3:00 to go in the game, UMass had a stick break trying to defend against Army. It was just that kind of day.
GOAL OF THE GAME: Army attackman Nate Jones scored a pretty transition goal at 12:44 left in the game off an Army steal and then feed from preseason All-American David Symmes.
HOMETOWN HERO: UMass midfielder Jeff Trainor is from Billerca, Mass., the same hometown as Atlanta Brave Hall of Famer Tom Glavine.
OFFENSIVE MARK FALLS: Black Knight freshman attackman Nick Garafano’s goal with 7:40 left in the game set a new Army mark for goals in a game against UMass. The previous mark was 15, set in 1993. They did not come close to the school single-game record for goals, however, which is 25.
OFFENSIVE MVP(s): Jones (3g, 2A), Conor Glancy (3G, 2A), Ted Glesener (3G, 1A), Symmes (3G, 3A)
DEFENSIVE MVP: The entire Army defense but particularly Army keeper AJ Barretto. Barretto allowed just six goals on 28 shots, including none in the second period, and the defense, led by preseason All-American Johnny Surdick, caused 13 turnovers.
3 orange slices: Glancy, for his first career hat trick.
2 orange slices: Jones Glesner, Symmes
1 orange slice: Rak. Scored a pair of goals off face off wins and was really the only thing UMass had going for it offensively.
